Funcionamiento cognitivo, masa grasa y actividad física en adultos jóvenes

Resumo

Introdução: As evidências sugerem uma associação entre excesso de peso e baixo desempenho cognitivo; no entanto, os resultados são inconsistentes devido às variações nas abordagens de medição. Mais investigação é necessária para explorar esta ligação, considerando factores como a actividade física e o nível de escolaridade.
Objectivo: este estudo teve como objectivo: (a) identificar possíveis diferenças no desempenho cognitivo entre participantes com níveis de massa gorda elevados versus normais e (b) avaliar os efeitos dos níveis de massa gorda e da actividade física no desempenho executivo e de interferência cognitivo -motora.
Metodologia: Foi realizado um desenho não experimental, envolvendo 61 participantes jovens adultos (Mage=18,9, DP=1,9) que foram submetidos a avaliações do funcionamento executivo, interferência cognitivo-motora em tarefas duplas, composição corporal e atividade física.
Resultados: Embora tenham sido encontradas diferenças a favorecer os participantes com níveis elevados de massa gorda, as mesmas não foram estatisticamente significativas. Estes resultados permaneceram consistentes independentemente do nível de atividade física.
Discussão: Embora alguns estudos tenham encontrado uma associação entre a elevada adiposidade e o menor desempenho cognitivo, outros não detetaram esta relação. Os nossos resultados estão em linha com estes últimos, enfatizando a necessidade de estudos futuros incluírem variáveis ​​mediadoras para melhor compreender esta associação complexa.
Conclusão: esta investigação suporta a noção de que os indivíduos com excesso de peso e obesidade não apresentam um desempenho inferior na interação executiva e cognitivo-motora em comparação com os indivíduos com níveis normais de massa gorda.
