Abstract

Introduction: In soccer, it is essential to monitor certain physical factors that can be performance determinants or predictors to elaborate adequate individual training.

Objectives: 1) To analyze the differences observed at the beginning of the season (T0) and before the Christmas break (T1) for phase angle (PhA) and various performance parameters between the different playing positions in professional soccer players, as well as the changes produced in those variables for every playing position; 2) To determine if there is a correlation between the PhA and the performance parameters analyzed.

Methodology: Average distances covered during trainings (total distance, walking distance, and running distance) and PhA at T0 and T1 were analyzed.

Results: Several significant differences in the distances covered were observed between the different playing positions at T0, but none of them were observed at T1. No significant differences were found in PhA at T0 or T1. Various positive significant correlations between PhA and the distances covered were found.

Discussion: Our results suggest that accumulated fatigue between T0 and T1 was more pronounced in forwards and less pronounced in defenders and midfielders. The positive correlations between the distances covered and the PhA reinforce the idea that players with a higher PhA present better performance.

Conclusions: Monitoring PhA values during the season may be used by coaches to design training sessions, using appropriate training loads to optimize recovery.
