Abstract

Introduction: Sedentary lifestyles among children and adolescents have increased due to prolonged use of electronic devices outside of school hours, raising health concerns. This phenomenon affects quality of life and the development of healthy habits.

Objective: to determine the influence of motivation to learn physical education and the level of sedentary behavior outside school hours in primary school students.

Methodology: A quantitative design with a cross-sectional, descriptive-explanatory approach was used. The Achievement Motivation in Physical Education Test (AMPET) and the Physical Activity and Sedentary Lifestyle Questionnaire (APALQ) were administered to 172 primary school students at a private school in Lima, Peru.

Results: Achievement motivation for learning physical education influenced levels of sedentary behavior outside school hours. Significant values (p = .000) were found, confirming the association between the two variables.

Discussion: The findings confirm previous studies on the influence of motivation to learn physical education on the level of sedentary behavior outside school hours. Forty-nine percent of students are sedentary, another 49% are moderately active, and only 2% are considered very active, which highlights potential risks to health and future quality of life.

Conclusions: Achievement motivation in physical education influences levels of sedentary behavior outside school hours, making it necessary to implement public policies that promote healthy lifestyle habits from an early age.
