Objective: To establish the relationship between body self-esteem and body composition in young adults, both men and women, who attend gyms in a Colombian population. Method: Quantitative study with a correlational scope in a stratified random probabilistic sample of 151 individuals (71 men, 81 women) aged between 18 and 30 years who trained with the goal of increasing muscle mass and main-taining or decreasing body fat percentage, classified as recreationally active individuals (Tier 1). The Body Self-Esteem Scale (BSES), validated in the Colombian population, was used to measure body self-esteem (BS). To measure body composition, the five-component model was used. Results: In men, the variables of the five-component model with statistically significant correlations and associations were: skin mass in kilograms, percentage of: adipose mass, muscle mass, and bone mass in kilograms. For women, the variables with statistically significant correlations and associations were: masses in kg of: skin, adipose tissue, muscle, and residual mass. Conclusion: Low correlations were found between body self-esteem and body composition measured with the five-component model in men (percentage of muscle mass, bone mass, residual mass, and percentage of fat) and women (muscle mass, fat mass, and skin mass).
Keywords: body image, body satisfaction, body self-esteem, anthropometric.
