The aim of the study was to assess gender differences by birth tertile in anthropometric variables, anaerobic parameters, and quantitative muscle ultrasound between boys and girls of school age. Participants were 159 schoolchildren (9.36±0.84 years), 70 girls (9.50±0.77 years) and 89 boys (9.25±0.88 years), from the city of Medellin, Colombia. A cross-sectional, comparative and non-randomized study was carried out. The sample was divided into groups based on the year of birth. Each year was divided into tertiles. Anthropometric measurements were made: body mass, height and percentage of fat, and subsequently an ultrasound of the right quadriceps was performed, followed by an evaluation of the CMJ-type jumps and continuous jumps. For the comparison of girls and boys, of each year and tertile, the U-Mann Whitney test and the Biserial-Rank were used. There were statistically significant differences in the 2010 group in EIRFC, EIVIC, Dif1C, Dif2C, Dif3C and EIVLC. In the ARF in the 2008 group and in the 2010 group; in the AVL in the 2008 group and in the 2010 group and in the vertical jump in the CMJ in the 2009 group and in the 2010 group. The differences in anthropometric measurements, vertical jump and ultrasound of the quadriceps muscle without the influence of the relative age effect between boys and girls included in this study are not constant in the different variables or in the age groups evaluated, and when they did appear they were in favor of the male gender.
