Abstract

Introduction: The social, economic, educational, and political contributions of sporting events have been significant subjects of scientific investigation. Gymnastics festivals serve as spaces for coexistence, exchange, and learning, offering meaningful contributions to contemporary society.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the experiences of a Gymnastics for All group at the World Gymnaestrada, with particular focus on human relationships.

Methodology: Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed using the phenomenological method. The descriptions were organized into three units of meaning, discussed through the lens of concepts from the philosopher Hannah Arendt, as outlined in her book “The Human Condition”.

Discussion: The unit The non-competitive nature and the experience of disinterested participation examines the demonstrative aspect of this event and how the absence of institutionalized competition fostered a sense of openness among participants, moving beyond a utilitarian perspective on sports and physical activity. In the unit Enhancing the sense of belonging through diversity, we explore the festival's "for all" ethos and the strong sense of belonging reported by participants, who recognized themselves as integral to both the group and the event. Lastly, the theme Experiencing different social relationships investigates the collective experience of participation, discussing the pre-existing bonds among group members and the new relationships formed through the opportunities created by the World Gymnaestrada.

Conclusions: The results emphasize the collective nature of the experience and its role in strengthening social connections within the group, fostering a sense of belonging, and promoting diversity and plurality.
